American Idol Songs??

My friend submitted a song to the AI Songwriters contest...and he just might win.

Being a radio guy, I have had the opportunity be around a lot of talented people. What is even more cool is to meet someone who is talented but hasn't quite been discovered by the public...yet.

One of the most memorable happened when I was working late at the station one night. (Well not THAT late but it was "later" than normal.) Almost all the staff had left and I was in a studio with a window facing the the lobby and there was this girl sitting in one of the plush, oversized chairs. She had a guitar and she was there with her dad to play a couple of songs in the PD's office. That was when I met Michelle Branch. It was very cool.

Oh yeah. This is supposed be about American Idol Songs.

So, every year the AI winner sings a song right after they win. The song is chosen from a songwriting contest to find the song that becomes the first single and blah blah blah..here comes the next season.

This year, I have a friend who submitted a song. There were thousands...possibly tens of thousands of songs submitted. They only select 20 songs to vote for at http://songwriter.americanidol.com.

And holy smokes his song was picked as a finalist! "Something Like Heaven" is the song. I think it's the perfect song for the AI single. I'm probably biased because I really want Aaron Sidwell to win. (Search for Aaron Sidwell on iTunes, too. Great versatility.)

I met Aaron a couple years ago in Wichita, KS. I was there to coach a Children's Miracle Network Radiothon and Aaron was there because he had a story to tell. Aaron had cancer when he was 3. He's fine now. Aaron has committed so much time supporting Via Christi Wichita Health Network and Children's Miracle Network and to think he's got a shot at winning this thing is amazing. Back when I met him, Aaron was writing, recording, and performing, but it wasn't like he was a superstar or anything. He was just working hard and helping kids along the way.

Now, I really want him to win. Not because he had cancer and does nice things for sick and injured kids; because "Something Like Heaven" is a great song.

Go vote.
